Building the Idea
December 2025
Students and advocates researched successful youth councils in other states and identified a clear gap: Georgia has no formal way for youth to advise state leadership.
Drafting the Bill
January–February 2026
Working with legislative allies, the Coalition helped draft the bill establishing the Georgia Youth Advisory Council's membership, duties, and reporting requirements.
Coalition Building
April 2026–Today
The Coalition for a Georgia Youth Advisory Council formed to unite students, educators, and community members behind the cause.
Legislator Outreach
April 2026–Today
Coalition members began meeting directly with state legislators, sharing the bill, petition results, and success stories from other states to build a base of co-sponsors.
Securing a Sponsor
April 2026–Today
Identifying and confirming a primary legislative sponsor to formally introduce the bill in the Georgia General Assembly.
Committee Review
Anticipated for the 2027 Legislative Session
The bill moves through committee hearings, where Coalition members and student advocates may testify in support.
Floor Votes
Anticipated for the 2027 Legislative Session
The bill is brought to a vote in the Georgia House of Representatives and Senate.
Governor's Signature
Anticipated for May–June 2027
If passed, the bill goes to the Governor's desk for signature, officially creating the Georgia Youth Advisory Council.
Council Launch
After the Bill Is Signed
Applications open, the first 15 members are appointed, and Georgia's youth officially gain a formal voice in state government.
